Background of the Study
The retail industry has undergone significant transformations in recent years, with the rise of e-commerce and the continued relevance of traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Online shopping has gained popularity due to its convenience, variety, and competitive pricing, while physical stores continue to offer the benefit of in-person shopping experiences, immediate product access, and customer service. One of the most critical factors in consumers' shopping decisions is trust—trust in the safety of transactions, product quality, and the reliability of the seller.

In Nasarawa State, both online and physical retail stores play a vital role in the local economy, with many consumers balancing the use of both channels depending on their needs. However, as online shopping becomes more prevalent, concerns about security, fraud, and the inability to physically inspect products persist. Understanding how consumer trust influences shopping decisions in both online and physical retail environments is crucial for businesses seeking to improve customer loyalty and optimize their operations.

This study aims to evaluate consumer trust in online versus physical retail stores in Nasarawa State, examining the factors that influence trust, consumer behavior, and the overall shopping experience in both environments.

Statement of the Problem
While both online and physical retail stores continue to attract consumers in Nasarawa State, consumer trust remains a significant challenge, especially for online shopping. Concerns over the safety of personal information, the authenticity of products, and the reliability of online retailers affect consumers' willingness to purchase from online stores. In contrast, physical stores benefit from the ability to build trust through face-to-face interactions. This study seeks to evaluate how consumer trust in online and physical retail stores affects shopping trends and preferences in Nasarawa State.

  2. How does consumer trust in physical retail stores compare to trust in online retail stores?

  3. How does consumer trust affect shopping behavior and purchasing decisions in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Consumers have a higher level of trust in physical retail stores compared to online retail stores in Nasarawa State.

  2. Factors such as product quality, website security, and customer reviews significantly influence consumer trust in online retail stores.

  3. Consumer trust in retail stores (both online and physical) directly impacts purchasing behavior and brand loyalty in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on consumers in Nasarawa State and evaluate their trust in both online and physical retail stores. It will explore factors such as security, product quality, and customer service that influence trust and shopping behavior.
